MediaTek's dual-core IC solutions including the MT6577 and MT6517 have been adopted in a number of new Android smartphones, which will be launched in Brazil over the next several months, according to the fabless IC firm.

The upcoming Android models are multimedia-rich, will be offered at an affordable price, MediaTek indicated. The MediaTek MT6577 processor, in particular, will enable smartphones to come with improved browser performance and the user experience similar to that of high-end smartphones, while being offered at a mid-entry level price point, the firm said.

Local brands in Brazil including Gradiente, Meu and Multilaser have selected MediaTek's integrated mobile solutions to power their feature-rich Android smartphones, the chip supplier revealed. Meanwhile, international brands such as Motorola has leveraged MediaTek's solutions to develop entry- to mid-level smartphones targeting users in Brazil, the chip firm said.

Citing Strategy Analytics, MediaTek expects smartphone sales in Brazil to grow over 76% in 2012. Entry- and mid-level models will play as a key growth driver, and are expected to account for nearly 60% of total smartphone sales in Brazil by 2017, MediaTek said.

MediaTek also claimed that the firm is ranked third in the smartphone applications processor market according to Strategy Analytics, with the majority of its thirteen-fold on-year growth in the first half of 2012 driven by the rapidly increasing entry and mid-level smartphone segments.
